This is a fantastic article about the goal of physical therapy for children with Down syndrome, written by Patricia C. Winders, PT: The Goal and Opportunity of Physical Therapy for Children with Down Syndrome. She is the author of a book that I use frequently in my practice entitled Gross Motor Skills in Children with Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals. This book is an inexpensive resource that offers many home program ideas for parents to perform with their children. I love the fact that each chapter includes a progression of activities as the children gain skills. The numerous photos are a major plus, too, as I am a very visual person.
I'm not just a PT, I'm also a parent!

Did you know? -- Pujols Family Foundation
I'm a lifelong Angels fan, but I have to admit that I haven't been following the team much this season because I've been so preoccupied with my son's IEP process, starting special Ed and OT, running my household, and working. I know that Albert Pujols' performance is disappointing to some and I know that the team has a terrible record. So I was pleasantly surprised to learn this morning that Albert Pujols has a daughter with Down syndrome and he started a foundation in her honor.
The Pujols Family Foundation's vision statement is "To promote awareness, provide hope and meet tangible needs for families and children who live with Down syndrome. To provide extraordinary experiences for children with disabilities and/or life threatening illnesses. To improve the standard of living and quality of life for impoverished children in the Dominican Republic through education, medical relief and tangible goods." The foundation has recently gone nationwide, so I expect to hear more about it in the future.

Happy World Down Sydrome Day 2012!
Happy World Down Syndrome Day to all those with Down Syndrome and all those blessed to know them!
I also wanted to give a shout out to all the people with Down Syndrome whom I have known and worked with over the years. Rudy, Ava, Bryce, Donald, Cole, Jimena, Trent, Cindy, and Kyle -- you have all been blessings in my life!
For parents, family members, and friends of people with Down Syndrome, I have created a page of Down Syndrome resources that offers information on non-profits, recreational activities, books, blogs, and more!

Are Kids with Down Syndrome on the Road to Extinction?
I saw this article yesterday and couldn't help thinking of all the people with Down Syndrome whom I have been blessed to know, including my cousin. I personally believe that every life has purpose and merit and that every single person has inherent dignity. It saddens me to think that this type of discrimination exists in our world.
